Today I’m forging a 4 foot display stand for an imminent craft market, and I’m taking a break in the beautiful sunshine to sit with the dogs and write a newsletter. This is the first newsletter from the forge in what I plan to make a monthly occurrence. Thank you for being subscribed and having an interest in what is new at the workshop of the Drunken Dwarf, which will include new product lines, project showcases, upcoming events, and my personal progress as an artisan blacksmith. Perhaps this year I will finally forge the picnic table I’ve always pictured in front of the workshop so I’ve got a more comfortable spot on the grass to write newsletters with the sunbathing pups.
Project Showcase: Fireplace set for a friend
I’ve just finished a commission for an old friend I used to work with. It was great to reconnect, she has recently moved back north and was in need of a fireplace set. Not the full companion set, just the poker and shovel with some hooks to hang them by. She had been really fond of the curled handles I put on my bottle openers, so I designed with her a nice set to draw inspiration from those and a set of hooks to really compliment them. It was a great opportunity to take a little bit of extra care to make it special, working on some traditional split work and rivet fitting, as well as some nice chisel detailing to help the twists pop. I was very pleased with the final set, and more importantly, so was the client. I even filmed a lot of the forging, so you can look forward to seeing the process on my YouTube channel soon!
